The journey of a single thread

From the high pastures of Ladakh to the finishing table, every piece passes through the same four sets of hands.

I
The combing
Changthang plateau, Ladakh
Each spring, at four thousand metres, herders comb the winter down from Changthangi goats by hand. Only the underfleece is kept, a few grams of fibre finer than a human hair, gathered without a single shear.

The spinning
Srinagar valley
The raw pashm is cleaned, carded, and given to spinners who draw it into thread on the wooden charkha. It is a movement learned across generations; no machine has matched the fineness of the hand.

The loom
The weaving houses of Kashmir
On walnut handlooms, the weave grows shuttle by shuttle, some two hundred hours for a single shawl. The weaver signs the selvedge, and the atelier records the piece in its ledger.

The finishing
Qashmirè atelier
Washed in cold spring water, dried in mountain shade, the cloth is hand-rolled at the hem and pressed once. Each piece leaves numbered, with the mark of the hands that made it.
